The Hour of Code sessions at OWNCS

The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science.  Free materials are provided through the website Code.org. It is a part of a week-long celebration of Computer Science Education Week, which takes place every December.

Here at OWNCS, we had participation of all the grade levels, from Kindergaten through 8th grade. The materials were differentiated based on grade level, but all involved the use of programming blocks to give instructions to animated characters (the Angry Bird, Pixel the Dog, Anna and Elsa).  The sessions were conducted by Mr. Alcruz, Mr. Franks, Mr. Clendenning, Ms. Gambardella, and Ms. Ortiz.

The response from the students was enthusiastic across the board, and many of them continued with the computer programming exercises at home.  We look forward to next year's Hour of Code sessions and the new materials that will be provided.
